In the background on TV are shots of Richard Nixon insisting “I am not a crook.”Īll the characters move in and out of prison, including Patriarca, who still manages to run the crime syndicate while he’s locked up. Going into hiding, the robbers wait to receive their share of the loot. They pull it off, grabbing $32 million, but then the trouble begins. Enlisting Deuce and Chucky, the three hatch a plan to rob the place with five cohorts. Karyn is the girlfriend of heist principal Deuce played by Theo Rossi, and Chucky, played by Clive Standan, is Deuce’s best friend and partner in crime. Samira Wiley of “Orange Is the New Black” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” takes on the one major female role of Karyn Sponheim. One of Patriarca’s gangster underlings, Gerry Ouimette, is played by Johnson, who built his career as Detective James Crockett on the TV classic, “Miami Vice” (1984-1990). In “The Vault” he’s played by Palminteri, the Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee for “Bullets Over Broadway” (1994). If you are looking for something that will somewhat satisfy a heist genre craving and won’t ever go off the rails it’s traveling then this is okay.In an interview last weekend, Verdi talked about what led him to a film about what was, back then, the biggest heist in American history. I’d say that’s mostly a dialogue issue as the script and concept here is pretty cool as far as bank job movies go. Liam Cunningham is great, but like his fellow actors his character falls into too many film tropes leaving his screen time flat.

I’m supposed to believe Highmore’s character is super intelligent and can figure any issue out in the moment because we’re TOLD he solved an oil spill problem, which they never show us, and is being courted by oil companies? The one “big” turn or twist in this movie wasn’t all that impressive or emotional, but I still found the movie taught and somewhat intense given the situations all the characters get into. Both of these things are forced upon viewers with heavy handed dialogue. It seemed so determined to rush through its run time with very little thought to pacing or character development. I’m supposed to believe Highmore’s character is super I enjoyed this movie in spite of itself. They will only have 105 minutes to do so, while the Bank's staff will be distracted, watching the 2010 Football World Cup final match, played by Spain's national soccer team and broadcast on a giant screen, coincidentally placed just in front of the Bank of Spain building. As soon as Thom learns that a legendary lost treasure is going to be held at the bank's safe for just 10 days, he devises, together with charismatic art dealer Walter "Cunningham" a detailed plan to breaking in. The Bank building is more than 100 years old, with no building blueprints available and a security system that includes an underground river that will flood the safe room if their walls are breached.
